Have you ever wanted to learn a language? I have and using an android phone I decided to search for an app that I could use anywhere, anytime.
Memrise is a language learning app that I have been using every day, twice a day for the past two weeks.
First let's look at cost:
Memrise is free and you can choose to upgrade to a paid version of which I did. It cost me £18.50 for the year. This was at their 50% discounted price. I chose to upgrade for the extra features, specifically the difficult words feature. I would not have paid for pro at full price because I am on a budget.

From what I can see there are 22 languages to choose from though some seem more developed than others which may be a factor when choosing to go pro or not. For example some courses have less or no grammar bots than others which means value for money is not equally spread across all the languages.
Memrise is set up like a game with lessons as levels that include interactive speaking and listening features as well as a lesser degree of writing features. I find it very engaging and find myself talking to the app often which I am pleased about because it means I am practising my speaking skills! I also find the pronunciation feature useful as it helps me pick up words and phrases faster.
What are these features?
Learn with locals - pro
Pronounciation
Difficult words - pro
Listening skills
Classic and speed review
Grammar bot and chat bot - pro
If I were to look for downsides I would say the learn with locals feature needs to be introduced in all levels because it is a great way to learn the context of words from peoples body language. I enjoyed copying the few examples that were shown.
Also the underdeveloped Grammar Bot is the most interactive feature. I have seen up to four basic Grammar Bot lessons depending on the language you are learning. I think the developers would be wise to improve this feature as interaction is what improves learning.
If you are just dabbling in languages it's a fun way to spend five or ten minutes seeing if you enjoy a specific language, and if you are serious about learning a language you could delve right in as I have, spending up to an hour and a half practising two languages a day. I have to admit some day I just don't have time for a full lesson so I complete a classic review to keep up to speed on words already learned, and in the process earn hints for later lessons!
Please do leave any feedback below.
If you made it this far....
